Are hand sanitizer Haram or Halal?

This question has been put to me on different forums. Here’s a summary of my response:

1. These sanitizers contain isopropyl alcohol and/or ethanol.Wikipedia says :” Alcohol-based versions typically contain some combination of isopropyl alcohol, ethanol (ethyl alcohol), or n-propanol”Isopropyl alcohol is more of a poison than an intoxicant. It’s usually classified as a poison. One who drinks it should be designated as one attempting suicide. Hence the rule of it being khamr ( an intoxicant shouldn’t apply)

  1. Ethanol is the active ingredient in alcoholic beverages hence it is the khamr prohibited in the Qur’an.

(Let’s also add that one may also hold isopropyl alcohol also an intoxicant because it can make a person have drunken behaviour.)

So what about this ?

The majority of the jurists hold alcohol not only impermissible to drink but also ritually impure . So for them having alcohol on your person will require you to wash it off to perform Salah.

Included also are Shawkani, Siddeeq Khan , Ibn Uthaymeen and others.

They argue that consumption is what’s prohibited and alcohol is in itself pure.

If one is convinced with
